Birmingham Historical Facts

Birmingham, Michigan has a history dating back to 1807. While it was eventually established through a land deal after the War of 1812, it was originally thought to be an extensive swampland. However, once settlers started to explore, they found that the land wasn't nearly as swampy as originally thought. From there, Birmingham's first few residents started building up the economy with hotels and taverns.

While many businesses began to form around them in the 1830s like tanneries, blacksmiths, and a factory, it had all but disappeared by the Civil War. What soon emerged from the lost dreams of an industrial city were the Eccentric Newspaper (which still exists), banks, merchants, and professionals like doctors and lawyers. By the end of the 19th Century, roads and street car lines were built as well as a paid fire department, clean water supply, and a public library.

Then there was the automobile. Birmingham witnessed a population boom in the 1930s thanks to the automobile industry. Today's major economic output is seen via its small shops which add to the charm of a small-town feel on and near Old Woodward Avenue.
