Northville Homes for Sale

Northville is considered a higher-end community in western Wayne County, with a large middle class, and having the highest property values among its neighbors. A unique fact to Northville is that it is one of the few communities in Michigan to reside in counties Oakland and Wayne. Northville has more luxury homes than any other community in Wayne County. It is one of Michigan's veteran communities, and known for its charming small town atmosphere and rich heritage. Downtown Northville boasts old-fashioned street lamps glowing at night over the brick paved streets and Victorian era architecture. The residential area consists of attractive tree-lined neighborhoods featuring many historic homes restored to their original Victorian brilliance, and renovated landmarks including the four-sided town clock.

Population

Northville Township currently has a little over 21,000 people while the City of Northville is much smaller with 6,500 people for a combined count of over 27,000 in the Northville community.

Prevalent Architecture

The Northville community has a wide array of housing development from rambling farm houses on unpaved roads, to traditional neighborhoods, newer built condominiums and older Victorian charmers throughout the downtown area. Housing in the city tends to be newer construction, with numbers as high as 80% of the homes in the township have been built sooner than 1970 and more than half since 1980.

The past couple years there have been more foreclosures in Northville. Investors are starting to buy distressed bank owned homes for very reasonable prices as more homeowners go through the foreclosure process in Northville.

Brief History

In 1824, men by the names of Tibbits, Starkweather, McFarlan, Dunlap, Beal, Cady, Yerker, Horton, and Hutton, after whom many streets are named, penetrated their way through timber and hiked from Detroit out to the community of what later became Plymouth Township, which is now Northville. It took all of four days to make the trip.

The City was incorporated as a village in 1867 and as a city in 1955. The 2.2 square mile area is equally divided between Wayne and Oakland Counties.

The Presbyterian Church of Northville is the oldest church in town, organized in 1812. Teachers at the time were paid $1.12 to $2.00 per week. The library was purchased for $837.00.
