St. Clair Shores Community Historical Facts

The St. Clair Shores community was originally inhabited by French settlers back in the early 1700’s when it was called L’Anse Creuse (that name is still prominent especially as L’Anse Creuse Public Schools) but really became a bastion of the area in the early twentieth century with the building of an amusement park named Jefferson Beach which, in 1927, featured the longest roller coaster in the United States.

A series of events such as a fire which destroyed many buildings in the amusement park and the ending of World War II turned St. Clair Shores from a resort community into a metro Detroit suburb.
