Northville Historical Facts

Although settled in 1825, it took a while for the city of Northville to come into its own. Originally it was one of two communities within Plymouth Township (Plymouth is its next door neighbor these days) until 1898 when it became its own village.

Northville has been home to many prominent businesses throughout the year. Globe Furniture Factory thrived in the community in the mid-19th century and Henry Ford had his Valve Plant located in Northville in the 1920’s and 1930’s.

Many of Northville’s early residents have street names throughout town! These include Rufus Thayer Jr. (Thayer Blvd.), Joseph Yerkes (Yerkes St.), Daniel and Samuel Cady (Cady St.), William Dunlap (Dunlap St.) as well as many other settlers.

Finally, Northville Downs was where Joe Louis had trained for a while in 1939.

• Parmenter’s Northville Cider Mill - if there’s one thing that every Michigander loves, it’s cider and donuts in the fall. Parmenter’s proudly serves up tasty cider and donuts 7 days a week during season and brag about being the oldest continuously operating business in the city.

• Northville Downs – the Northville Downs has offered nighttime horse racing since 1944. If you have an itch to watch live racing or bet on over 375 races around the country via their simulcast system, this is a fun place to enjoy an evening out.

• Maybury Farms – family fun when the weather is warm, or a little cool, Maybury Farms has hayrides, barnyard animals, planted fields, gardens, beehives, bird houses, a corn maze and a fresh produce market. Get the kids away from the video games and give them something to experience.

Northville has it all
