Novi Historical Facts

The Novi community was created in 1832 from Farmington Township. There are many theories on how the name came to be. Residents were supposedly looking for a shorter name than Farmington, and it is believed that it was finally suggested by the wife of local doctor J.C. Emory. Nevertheless, the name was approved by state authorities and in the fall of 1832, the Township of Novi was detached from Farmington. The townships of Commerce, Milford and Lyon were also included, until they organized separately in 1834.

Local residents will often refer to the community as The Corners or Four Corners. At the time of its organization as a township, the only regularly laid out road was the one running from Walled Lake through the entire width of Novi to Northville. It was intersected by the Grand River military road, known then as the Detroit and Howell Plank Road. The area around the intersection at Grand River and the Northville-Walled Lake Road (now Novi Road) was called Novi Corners. The first town hall was built near Novi Road and Grand River in 1876. Prior to this time, township meetings were organized in the homes of local residents and at various Novi taverns.

In August 1957, Novi made a motion to incorporate the housing market as a village. After many petitions and many meetings, finally in September 1958, Novi approved its village charter by a 594 to 470 margin. Several attempts to incorporate Novi as a city failed, before the new city charter was finally approved in 1969.

Novi's Grand River Road was first surveyed in 1832 as a link between Detroit and Lake Michigan. Built over an old Native American trail, the road was an important east-west highway throughout the nineteenth century. The small village of Novi grew up along the road and remained a small farming community until the 1950s, when the Michigan State Highway Department greatly developed the highways and interstates in the region, making Novi much more accessible to Detroit. The village began to grow rapidly until it became a bedroom community of commuters to the big city. After two unsuccessful attempts in 1959 and 1962, Novi was incorporated in 1969.
