But farming began to decrease through the 19th century and Independence Township neighborhood became more of a vacation spot for Detroiters – almost like what “up-north” is today.

Adding the invention and influx of automobiles into the mix and Independence Township community was a popular vacation destination for many residents of Detroit. However, the Great Depression ceased land development and the vacationers mostly went away.
