Independence Township Historical Facts

Independence Township was first being settled in the late 1820’s from mostly people from New York and New Jersey and, by the 1840’s, over 800 people called this area home.  Most were initially farmers but as the population continued to grow and, with the growth of nearby Clarkston, other folks with different professions began to settle into Independence Township. But farming began to decrease through the 19th century and Independence Township became more of a vacation spot for Detroiters – almost like what “up-north” is today.
Adding the invention and influx of automobiles into the mix and Independence Township was a popular vacation destination for many residents of Detroit. However, the Great Depression ceased land development and the vacationers mostly went away.
