Commerce Township is considered an up and coming community due in part to highway M-5 being extended to Pontiac Trail. The lack of highway access has held Commerce back over the years. Commerce Township boasts 28 lakes totaling 1,704 acres within the township limits including many all sports lakes including Long Lake, Lower Straits, Middle Straits, Commerce Lake, Union Lake, Lake Sherwood, Carroll Lake, Cooley Lake, Fox Lake, and Wolverine Lake. For those who love the water, but not the action of motorized watercraft, there are quiet waters No-Wake Lakes such as Bass Lake, Clark Lake, Tray Lake, Twin Suns Lake, and Cranberry Lake.

Although real estate in general has struggled in Michigan, most waterfront properties in Commerce Township have held their own. The two neighborhoods in Commerce Township that boasts the most prestigous lake front homes would be Pine Cove Villas and Homestead Shores. Pine Cove Villas and Homestead Shores are located adjacent to each other and front on Lower Straits Lake.
All sports Union Lake has a boat launch located right on busy Union Lake Rd. This site is usually packed to capacity on weekends during the summer. This is a pay to launch site. During the week, it may be half full of trailers. There are around 30 spots for trailers. With 466 acres, Union Lake is full of great fishing spots. Walleye, bass, and bluegill all can be caught on drop offs and near a sunken Island near the center of the lake.
