Southpaw Presidents Are to the Far Left of Things
Only seven of our 43 presidents were born southpaws. James Garfield 20th, Herbert Hoover 31st, Harry Truman 33rd, Gerald Ford 38th, Ronald Reagan 40th, George H. Bush 41st, and Bill Clinton 42nd.
The term southpaw was coined in the 1890's when baseball fields were designed to keep the sun out of the batter's eyes. The batters faced east and the pitchers faced west. As the pitcher went into his motion his arm came from the south; and he became a southpaw.
George Bush broke the string of lefties when he was elected in 2000. But for those of you left-handers in the audience, you get the last laugh. As your fellow voters who are right-hand cast their ballots on Election Day - you guessed it - they'll be voting for a southpaw. Both John McCain and Barack Obama are left handed.
